Welcome to Excellence in Finance! We would like to express our immense gratitude to all the speakers and sponsors of the 2013 conference. Further thanks must be extended to all attendees, without whom Scotland's first student-run financial conference would not have taken place!

 

Following on from the 2013 Excellence in Finance conference, we are now starting to organise the 2014 edition with an augmented organising committee! More details regarding the conference will be updated here and on our social media platforms.

New Organising Committee for 2014

We are pleased to announce the new organising committee for Excellence in Finance 2014 has been elected. We were honoured by the extremely high standard of applications, not to mention the quantity, so at this stage we would like to sincerely thank all applications for their interest, and congratulate those who made it through the application process.

Announcement: Alistair Darling

The second of the EIF's keynote speakers has been confirmed as Alistair Darling! Mr Darling has served as an Edinburgh MP for 22 years, first for Edinburgh Central and now in Edinburgh South West. Currently chair of the Better Together Campaign against Scottish Independence, Mr Darling was Chancellor of the Exchequer from 2007 until 2010 during one of the most difficult times in the UK Economy's history. Having also served as Secretary of State for Trade and Industry, Scotland, Transport and Work and Pensions, Mr Darling was one of only three Labour MPs to serve in cabinet while Labour had control over the UK Government between 1997 and 2010.

The organising committee are delighted to announce the final addition to the esteemed programme - Peter Griffiths, CEO of Sainsbury's Bank. Having been appointed in November 2012, he joined the Bank at an exciting phase of its growth with the business having enjoyed four consecutive years of profit growth. Nevertheless, in the three months following his appointment, with Mr Griffiths at its helm the Bank delivered another strong performance with total new business volumes up by 37% year on year.

 

Mr Griffiths is former Chairman of the CBI Council in Wales and the Building Societies Association. He was awarded an OBE in the Queen’s Birthday Honours in 2010, in recognition of his support for the Financial Services Industry. He has previously worked with Principality,..

We are very pleased to announce that Dr Simon Clark, Head of Economics at the University of Edinburgh, has kindly agreed to chair our panel discussion, one of the conference's main features.

 

Simon Clark has been Head of the School of Economics since 2009, a role that puts him in a perfect position to not just view but also help shape the future of the financial industry. In addition to his role as Head of School, Dr Clark is involved with the university's Academy of Government, helping to train the next generation of leaders in public service. Within this role, Dr Clark convenes the course 'Economics of Public Policy.'
